From Wikipedia: "Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation and sculpture in Amarillo, Texas, U.S. It was created in 1974 by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the art group Ant Farm. It consists of what were (when originally installed during 1974) either older running used or junk Cadillac automobiles, representing a number of evolutions of the car line (most notably the birth and death of the defining feature of mid twentieth century Cadillacs; the tailfins) from 1949 to 1963, half-buried nose-first in the ground, at an angle corresponding to that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.[1]"

  1. Hmm. I always thought the Cadillac Ranch cars were more an imitation of Stonehenge than the Great Pyramid. But either way, they're certainly one of the wonders of the modern world! I like their irreverence, and the way they encourage audience participation. Looking forward to reading about more of your road trip stops. Happy A to Zing!

  2. Yeah, I had no idea that Pyramids were involved in the design.
Cadillac Ranch IS wonderful! I first saw it from I-40 in 1974, while driving from PA to CA for my first year of college at UCSB. Didn't ever stop until whenever I took this photo (95? 96?? I'm not home, too many road trips, can't remember). I loved seeing the layers of graffiti. I'll stop again the next time I cross the country that way.
"A to Zing." I like that!

  3. So glad you started your AtoZ trip in Amarillo, Texas. The Cadillac Ranch is pretty cool....even to us Texans who are pretty use to ranch craziness. Been there a few times, but can't remember taking pictures. What was I thinking? My Cowboy Dad drove a 1957 Pink Cadillac all the years of my growing up in the 1960's and into the 70's. Those fins were the subject of embarrassment to my 'sophisticated' sister who had to drive it to school...but her friends loved it. Today it sits among a collection of rusted, striped down wrecks in our hometown. You can still see those pink fins...I have pictures. Thanks for the reminder...great start to the challenge.

  4. Nice! Haven't heard of this before. I actually went to your other blog and commented. I wonder if Alex or the other A to Z staff could remove your other blog link from the AtoZ list?
